Vanessa Killen

Reformer Connection vs Compensation

FRIDAY 6 November 12:30pm - 2:30pm AEST
Recording available for 14 days

Resident teacher at The Movement Refinery and owner of Temple Pilates (Mornington Peninsula), Vanessa is a Pilates adventurer who has studied with some of the best globally and leads by example, trying, thinking and teaching. As a fully certified teacher who works with clients of all ages and movement capacities, Vanessa is an advocate of the Pilates method, a complete puzzle, here, she offers you a beautiful mix of corner pieces and tricky bits to enrich your understanding.

This 2-hour workshop will explore how we can better use our bodies as an integrated whole through the Reformer repertoire. We’ll delve into unilateral variations to discover where our compensations may lie and how we can find connection points to improve our practice. If you’re feeling comfortable in your usual reformer flow, incorporating unilateral work offers a great  physical and mental challenge so we don’t get complacent.

Join the dots: Using the Arm Chair and Ped-o-pul effectively to create a strong upper body

Friday 23 October 12:30pm - 2:30pm AEST

Recording available for 14 days

These two phenomenal pieces of original JHP invention are rarely used in commercial studios; let’s change that and ensure there is a purpose behind use.

Unlike the other major pieces that focus beautifully on supine training, these two look at more useful positions.

This session will help connect the periphery to the centre and then look to understand the idea of dynamic movement through the method….e.g.

How can we use the Arm Chair to develop spinal flexion?

What effect does the Classical ped—o-pul have on posture and responsive positioning when used thoughtfully?

Let’s find out and integrate the body with your breath through movement.

THE NEXT EXERCISE
The Craft of Choosing What Comes Next

Recording available for 14 days

Movement teachers make this decision constantly. We choose an exercise, the person moves, something happens — and then we have to decide: what next?

Rather than looking at programming as a predetermined sequence or searching for the “correct” progression, I’d like to explore the thinking that sits behind exercise selection, sequencing and adaptation.

The workshop would be built around three simple questions:

Why this exercise?
Why now?
What next?

The workshop doesn’t intend to to provide a programming formula or prescribe a “right” sequence. It’s really an exploration of the craft and decision-making behind good teaching — making some of the thinking we do intuitively more visible and giving people an opportunity to explore different, equally reasonable choices.
